PROFIT Exams

The Department or School Regulations and the Regulations of the specific study programme govern the methods for verifying the adequate preparation of students enrolled in the study courses. These assessments, which are always individual, must ensure the in-depth study, objectivity and fairness of the assessment in relation to the teaching and to what is explicitly required for the purpose of the exam.

Depending on the provisions of the study program regulations, the assessment criteria are expressed though a mark or a performance adjective.

Exams can be oral and/or written.

No more than 20 exams are assigned to each first cycle degree course; no more than 12 exams are assigned to each second cycle degree course; no more than 30 exams are assigned to each single cycle degree course in the case of courses lasting five years or 36 for courses lasting 6 years.

Integrated exam tests can be provided for several courses or coordinated modules; in this case, the professors in charge of the courses or of the coordinated modules participate collectively in the overall assessment, which cannot be divided into separate assessments.

Except in cases permitted by the didactic regulations, the repetition, with possible modification of the evaluation, of an exam that has already been passed is not allowed.

The exams are held under the responsibility of a Board, appointed by the President of the Degree Programme made up of at least 2 members, one of whom is the official professor of the subject and the other is a professor or an expert on the subject appointed by the Department Director or by the President of the School where established.

If deemed necessary, sub-commissions can be appointed according to the provisions of the Department or School Regulations when the didactic load requires it.

The examining Boards are chaired by the official professor of the subject or, in the case of courses with multiple modules or integrated exams, by professors indicated in the appointment provision; in case of absence or impossibility of the president, he is replaced by another official professor appointed by the Director of the Department or by the President of the School where established.

In order to pass the exam, it is necessary to achieve a minimum score of 18 points; the possible attribution of honours, in addition to the maximum score of 30 points, is subject to the unanimous evaluation of the examining Board or sub-commission.

No grade is attributed if the student does not pass the exam.

In any case, a special report is drawn up for the exam, which must be signed by the student, regardless of the result.

Students are allowed to withdraw during the entire duration of written exams.

Students are allowed to withdraw during oral exams prior to the recording of the final assessment of profit, which must be verbally communicated to the student by the Board before registration. Should the student withdraw, or has not passed the exam or has not accepted the grade, the annotation in the report will be used exclusively for statistical purposes, the evaluation will be taken into consideration exclusively for the purpose of interrupting the terms of the loss of student status.

The Study Program Regulations may establish that an exam cannot be taken in the next session if the student has not achieved a sufficiency assessment, establishing the terms to take it again.

Registration of exams is completed through an online procedure, which is governed by specific regulations.

The president of the Examining Board is responsible for the report, which is digitally signed.

The ordinary period for lectures, practical training, seminars, laboratory and supplementary activities is established, as a rule, for each academic year, between 15 September and the following 30 June.

Orientation, preparatory, supplementary, preparation and support activities for official teachings, as well as intensive courses and special activities, may also take place in other periods.

The profit exams and any other type of test subject to registration can only be taken after the completion of the related courses.

Students in good standing with enrolment and the payment of fees and contributions can take, without any numerical limitation, all the exams of completed teaching courses and in compliance with any prerequisites.

The exams taken in the period from 1 September to 31 March of the following academic year refer to the previous academic year and do not require re-enrolment.

The profit exam calendar, to be fixed taking into account the specific teaching needs and any prerequisites, is prepared by the Degree Programme Council, at the beginning of the academic year and for the entire academic year, and approved by the Director or by the President of the School where established.

There are 8 examination sessions which are distributed throughout the year, avoiding overlapping with the periods of lessons. Students who have not completed their degree within the prescribed years also have the possibility to sit other reserved exam sessions.

Students who, as of March 31, must take the final exam only, can regularize their enrolment for the following academic year by paying only the enrolment fee.

The final exams take place over at least four sessions distributed in the following periods: from May to July; from October to December; from February to April.

Any change in the starting date of the exam must be promptly communicated to the students, notifying the President of the study course indicating the reasons.

Once the starting date of the exam session has been set, it cannot be anticipated in any case.

For assessments through forms other than exams, the didactic regulations of the study courses identify the methods and the person in charge.

The student is required to know the rules of the didactic system, the regulations of their Degree Programme for each academic year, as well as the administrative rules regarding career validity under penalty of cancellation of exams that are taken in violation of these rules.

Exams will be cancelled automatically in case of:

  1. Failure to pass preparatory exams;
  2. Failure to comply with the barrier rules;
  3. Failure to enrol in the academic year for which the exam is expected;
  4. Repetition of an exam already passed;
  5. Exam taken without having acquired the minimum attendance provided for by the didactic regulations.

The cancelled exam must be repeated.

Final Graduation Exams

To graduate students must pass a final exam to verify that they have achieved the learning outcomes laid down in their study programme. The final exam is usually linked to the presentation of a written paper. The Examination Board makes an overall assessment of the candidate by considering not only the execution of the final examination but also other elements, including the study curriculum, time taken to complete the university career, and applying specific rules decided autonomously by each Department or Degree Programme.
To graduate from a 2nd cycle or single cycle degree programme (Laurea Magistrale, Laurea Magistrale a ciclo unico, Laurea Specialistica) students shall produce a dissertation on a topic that is consistent with the learning outcomes of their degree programme under the guidance of a supervising professor. The supervising professor will monitor and support the student's activities and ensure the suitability of the dissertation for presentation, as well as its originality, also using computer applications.

If provided for in the didactic regulations of the study programmes, the final exam can be held in a foreign language; likewise, the dissertation can be drawn up in a foreign language.

The Regulations of the specific study programme define the rules for the final exams, including the procedures for assigning the topics of the written papers and theses, the methods for designating the supervising professors and co-supervisors and their responsibilities, and the evaluation criteria.

The composition of the Board for the evaluation of the final graduation exam is established by the Director of the Department or by the President of the School.

The Boards are composed by at least 7 members for master's degrees, at least 3 members for first cycle degrees and at least 5 for the graduation exam in specialization schools and made up by a majority of professors and researchers of the University. Assistants, substitute professors, contract professors, graduate technicians referred to in art. 16 L. 341/1990, external experts can also participate as long as they are supervisors or co-supervisors of degree theses.

Once the student has discussed the thesis, which takes place in public, the Board decides, privately, the grade to attribute to the student and then publically announces the final result.

For a 1st, 2nd or single cycle degree programme the Board expresses its evaluation with a score out of one hundred and ten. The exam is deemed to be passed with a minimum grade of 66/110. For maximum grades (110/110), the Board may unanimously also grant honours (lode) for the particularly excellent results achieved.

For the specialization diploma, the Board expresses its evaluation with a score out of fifty. The exam is deemed to be passed with a minimum grade of 30/50. For maximum grades (50/50), the Board may unanimously also grant honours (lode) for the particularly excellent results achieved.

To be admitted to the final examination, students must:

  1. have completed all the exams at least 20 days before the graduation exam session; the Department Directors or the Presidents of the Schools, where established, are authorized, on specific requests adequately motivated by the students, to grant exceptions to this term;
  2. have obtained all the credits required by their study plan;
  3. have regularly paid all their tuition fees, including any fines for late payments.

The Departments establish the calendar for the four sessions of graduation dates, distributed over each of the three periods in the academic year (from May to July, from October to December, from February to April), as well as any specific requirements for registering for a graduation session.
