Presentation

The PhD programme aims to train young researchers for careers in universities, research institutes and high-tech companies, in Italy and abroad. The techniques and approaches of mathematics, physics and their applications to engineering are the main focus of the course. PhD students will acquire a solid update of the latest international developments in knowledge through an interdisciplinary approach for the analysis of complex systems, using innovative tools and methodologies. Moreover, they will gain insight into problems related to technology transfer and innovative processes that facilitate collaboration between the research and business worlds. High qualifications, scientific autonomy and self-updating capability will enable PhDs able to tackle frontier problems, to achieve significant results which will allow their inclusion in international research groups, in Italian and foreign institutions and companies, and in qualified teaching activities. Internationalization will be pursued completely in English, and enhanced through the course offering and, through the permanence of PhD students at prestigious international institutions and research centres.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The course proposal stems from the request for highly qualified personnel in both pure and applied physics and mathematics. The employment areas where the PhD title can be required are in the public sector (universities, research institutions and services), for which the title is essential to continue in the field of research, and in the advanced industry sector (electronics, electrotechnics, mechanics and advanced instrumentation), for which the title of doctor is preferential. A further employment option is available in teaching in high schools. Moreover, it is worth noting that frequently, PhDs can obtain positions within companies that operate in the financial markets or that face complex interdisciplinary problems.

Presentation

The PhD programme in "Architecture, Industrial Design and Cultural Heritage" aims to provide a third level postgraduate education, certifying that the student has acquired competence of high scientific level. The PhD title is awarded after having carried out three-year training and research activities and after having successfully discussed the Doctoral Thesis previous evaluated by two experts called evaluators.

PhD Doctors will have greater knowledge and understanding of the contemporary territory seen as superimposition of material and immaterial layers capable of defining the identity resulting from the interaction between geographic, natural, and archaeological, architectural and artistic, artificial-like inheritances.

The territory is a melting pot of complex intangible networks structured thanks to the existence, as well as resistance and persistence, of demo ethno anthropological characters that, over time have contributed to define a specific architectural, structural, physical, technological, linguistic, philosophical and literary activity able to culturally characterize the territories of belonging.

In a global and consumer society, therefore, the recovery of the material and immaterial values of contemporary territories represents a primary objective to be pursued and inverted through scientific research.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The preferred outlets defined by the PhD research Doctorate in "Architecture, Industrial Design and Cultural Heritage" are universities, public administrations, private companies.

The Programme prepares highly qualified professionals able to:

offer support and technology transfer to companies operating in the field of architecture, design and cultural heritage;

manage complex systems in monitoring activities for territorial and environmental systems;

handle problems related to noise pollution and sound perception both in closed and open spaces according to their vocation;

handle problems related to the rational use of energy in the built environment with reference to energy performance and the use of distributed small-scale energy production systems powered by traditional, renewable and/or assimilated sources;

carry out the profession in the field of management, conservation and protection of Cultural Heritage, in the definition of territorial policies, in the field of fruition and enhancement of assets, in conducting and managing archaeological excavations, planning and implementing interventions on museums and collections.

Presentation

The main aim of the PhD Course in Sciences of the Mind is to prepare young researchers in the field of Psychological Sciences. The prerequisite for applying is an academic degree at the Master level. The Course is specifically devised as the highest formation level for Psychologists, but it is in fact open to all students who have achieved a Master Degree and is interested in developing research in any field of the Psychological Sciences. Annually, a qualified commission will evaluate the applications to assign 2 Ph.D. grants to foreign students.

The PhD course will last three years.  Throughout the PhD Course, students will gradually acquire theoretical and methodological knowledge; will be stimulated to develop and plan innovative research projects; and will be encouraged to mature critical and dialectical skills.

To pursue such targets the students will attend interactive lessons and seminars on models of the mind, under the guidance of professors from the various fields of Psychological Sciences, both from our own and from other Departments. Indeed, the Board of the Course includes several Professors from foreign Universities, in continuity with our International Master Course on Psychology of the Cognitive Processes developed conjointly with the University of Lille (France), thus enhancing students’ perspectives of completing research projects of international relevance.

During the Course, the students will develop an original research project of their own addressing novel theoretical aspects, using adequate methodological tools, for the purpose of achieving novel findings that will represent an advancement of human knowledge. Students will also be encouraged to envisage possible practical applications of their own projects in the field of Psychological Sciences. The project will constitute the core of the student’s final thesis that will be presented to an external commission for evaluation at the end of the Course.

OCCUPATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The PhD Course pursues high educational and professional attainments. Those who will be awarded the PhD degree will be prepared to plan and conduct research projects in full autonomy in the field of Psychological Sciences by means of adequate experimental methodologies. They will be eligible to apply for National and International Academic positions and grant opportunities.

Such perspectives are well represented in the European Program for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020, in which Social Sciences and Humanistic disciplines play a fundamental role.

Ph. Doctors will also be qualified for applying to all private research Institutes (i.e. those identified in Italy as IRCCS) and public agencies devoted to the study of relationships between Mind and Brain in both healthy individuals and patients.

Further career options are represented by research agencies involved in the assessment of the psychological characteristics of their clients, and in human resource selection and management.

Ph. Doctors will be professionally qualified in all the above fields as they will have achieved a sound and scientifically based ‘modus operandi’ which is critical for any psychological field.

Presentation

The PhD programme in History and Transmission of Cultural Heritage provides third level education and training aimed at achieving a twofold purpose. Firstly, it intends to provide students with the opportunity to explore and employ the most advanced and interdisciplinary methodologies of research investigation in the humanistic sectors that define the PhD programme. Secondly, it proposes to combine pure research approaches with processes of cultural mediation and dissemination. Thus, the programme’s primary objective of educating scholars interested in carrying out scientific research in their own individual disciplinary fields will also be integrated through a training component aimed toward preparing highly qualified professionals for work in the world of cultural planning and dissemination with the purpose of enhancing both material and immaterial cultural heritage. In this perspective, PhD students will attend disciplinary training activities organised over a three-year period, which will include advanced level courses, seminars, conferences, and participation in laboratory research in order to develop specific and organic methodological, theoretical and historiographical skills underlying the main research themes of the Human Sciences. Teaching activities will aim to promote the acquisition of expertise with regard to the dissemination of the various forms of humanistic knowledge through the employment of diverse languages, tools and techniques, with a particular focus on the contribution of Information Technology.

OCCUPATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The PhD Degree aims to train scholars who wish to pursue research interests within universities or other advanced research institutions. The programme also intends to prepare highly specialized professionals for employment within various cultural and institutional fields, cinema, theatre and publishing companies that are responsible for the safeguarding and protection of cultural heritage and its digitalization (libraries, archives, museums, superintendancies). The programme also includes cultural and advanced didactic training, as well as the preparation of experts in the fields of the valorisation of material and immaterial cultural resources and assets; the management and direction of archaeological excavations; as well as planning and implementing interventions for museums and private collections.
